RHATIGAN
ANT
JACK HAYTER
ELAINE PALMER

Thursday, 14th June 2001

Thanks to every one who took part in last months Cushy night particularly considering the bizarre allergic reaction I had just before going onstage which meant I looked a bit like Barry Mc Guigan after a fight, but the show must go on and on and on… This month we have the full complement of RHATIGAN rhythm section raring to go. www.suzannerhatigan.com

You may know that John Morrison erstwhile Rhatigan co-writer and bassist has been a vital part of popular combo HEFNER who are about to release their 4th album on Too Pure. This month you have a chance to see what a wealth of undiscovered song writing talent lurks behind Hefner song man Darren Hayman when drummer ANT aka ANTONY HARDING once again casts his melancholy spell over his adoring fans. I have been promised we will get a glimpse of new material following his wonderful debut EP released last year 'Cures for broken hearts'… visit his new web site for a closer look www.antpop.com

JACK HAYTER's addition to the Hefner line up opened their sound with the myriad of instruments; guitar, keys, pedal steel and violin he added, but we haven't heard too much thus far of his own original song writing. Having released a couple of remarkable but obscure records with the sublime SPONGE FINGER who I hope we haven't heard the last of, he came to Cushy studios and recorded some of his beguiling tunes. Time and other commitments meant they were never completed but happily Darren Hayman succeeded in capturing Jacks unique alt folk/shanty style, which comprise a four-song sampler, which so far only a lucky few possess.
JACK has a web site too...

ELAINE PALMER hails from Yorkshire where she has honed her soulful sensual song writing and voice with consistent gigging most recently as part of the Breaking Borders tour around the North of England funded by the northern arts boards. She is a fearless young performer having spent six weeks winning over discerning singer/songwriter audiences in New York, so it is just a matter of time before London submits.

RHATIGAN
JUBILATION LEE
AQUTE COUCH

Thursday, 10th May 2001

Hey Ho

As the British summer gets under it's wet way we have something to compensate you poor vitamin D deficient souls. RHATIGAN will be without hard working drummer Paul who is on one of his money-making sabbaticals so I will play solo, but hopefully trick co-writer bassist John into assisting on some tunes. He could press start on the sequencer or something… www.suzannerhatigan.com

Also attempting to warm you up will be the 'hunky' JUBILATION LEE. They first came to my attention through Cushy regular Blair Jollands of El Hula infamy. A CD was duly sent my way and here they are for your delectation. Jubilation Lee is futuristic pop music in the grand vaudeville tradition, they site; Roxy Music, The Supremes, Scott Walker, Spike Milligan, The Associates, Public Enemy, Ernest Hemmingway, The Velvet Underground, Prince, Brel and Sam and Dave, among their many and varied influences. We shall see… www.jubilationlee.com

Make sure you catch the close harmony avant guard acoustic jazz/agit pop stylings of Wakefield based AQUTE COUCH. Two strong female vocals accompanied by double bass and guitar produce an intense accomplished sound... www.AquteCouch.co.uk

RHATIGAN
HORSEPOWER
LYNDSEY COCKWELL

Thursday, 12th April 2001

Greetings

I may have mentioned in previous Cushy missives that RHATIGAN are working on an album and indeed we are. However, making the transition from 8, (though more often seven) tracks of a Fostex R8 with a dodgy motor, to the brutal reality of 'hard disc' recording has been quite a challenge and has opened the door to many musical possibilities, all of which we intend to explore. So this is a warning, it may be some time. Meanwhile………
Flyer 12-04-01 Link to Cushy Gallery 2001HORSEPOWER are back. This is their first gig this year marking the release of their second album 'FAYETTEVILLE' out in May on their own label Pony Pony. I did ask Ian Bishop, (lead vocals) what Fayetteville is and I think he said some thing about a small town in Louisiana, or some such place, evoking a sparse swampy atmosphere which is exactly what they sound like, allied with an urban raw kind of cool which makes them one of the best live bands around and remarkably, unsigned.

First on tonight is singer songwriter LYNDSEY COCKWELL who sent me a demo I quite liked. She records her gritty folk songs using a mixture of guitar drums and saw along side ambience and real life sounds she samples around her. Not sure how she will reproduce the effect live, I guess we'll see on the night.
